How scores work

Inspectors add points for each violation, so a lower score is better. A score range does not always mean NYC posted that letter grade.

Score ranges and grade codes

A0–13 points B14–27 points C28+ points
  • A range: 0–13 points. An initial inspection in this range can receive an A on the spot.
  • B and C ranges: 14+ points. An initial inspection in these ranges is scored but not graded yet; the grade comes after the re-inspection.
  • N: not yet graded.
  • P: grade pending, a placeholder while the posted grade is resolved (often after a reopening).
  • Z: grade pending while the restaurant contests the result at a hearing.
  • Critical violations are the ones most likely to make people sick.

Initial inspection vs re-inspection

  • Initial inspection: the first routine inspection in a cycle. These are unannounced.
  • Re-inspection: a follow-up at least a week after an initial inspection that did not earn an A.
